Paving Season in the Lehigh Valley
Hot asphalt is a warm-weather product. Our Lehigh Valley freeze-thaw winters are what crack driveways here. Planning your project and booking estimates early in spring ensures the best temperature windows and proper compaction.
Hot-Mix Temperature Windows
Hot asphalt leaves the batch plant between 280F and 320F. It must be hauled, raked, and rolled while still hot. When ambient and ground temperatures drop too low, hot-mix cools too rapidly to achieve full compaction density.
The Freeze-Thaw Cycle
Eastern Pennsylvania experiences repeated winter freeze-thaw cycles. Water seeps into hairline cracks, expands by 9% upon freezing, and breaks apart the asphalt sub-base. Good drainage and crack sealing are critical defense mechanisms.
Sealcoating Requirements
Sealcoating needs roughly 50F and rising with dry weather for proper curing. Applying sealer in chilly or damp conditions prevents the binder emulsion from curing, leaving a tacky, streaked surface.
