Tar & Chip Paving in the Lehigh Valley, PA
Based in Walnutport, PA (Northampton County). Serving Northampton, Lehigh, Carbon, and Monroe Counties. Owner Dale meets every customer on site and oversees each project from written proposal to final rolling.
Tar and chip is a rustic, economical surface that costs less than hot-mix asphalt and stays more solid than plain gravel. We spray a layer of liquid asphalt binder over a prepared base, spread clean crushed stone over it, and roll the stone into the binder. The result grips tires, sheds water, and has a natural stone look that fits long rural lanes. DSP Paving installs tar and chip across Northampton, Lehigh, Carbon, and Monroe Counties from Walnutport.
It is a strong choice for long driveways and rural lanes where hot-mix would be costly. The embedded stone gives grip in wet weather and a finished look without the price of full paving.
We are honest about the tradeoffs. Some loose stone sits on the surface for the first season as the binder cures, and tar and chip is less suited to regular snow-blower use, which can scuff and lift the surface. For the right lane, the savings and the look make it worth it.

Signs You Need Tar & Chip Paving
Long Rural Driveway
A long lane is where tar and chip saves the most versus hot-mix asphalt.
Gravel Not Holding
If your gravel keeps migrating or rutting, a bound surface like tar and chip stays put.
Wanted a Paved Look for Less
Tar and chip gives a finished, stone surface without the cost of full hot-mix.
Steep Grade on Gravel
A bound surface holds the grade better than loose stone that washes downhill.
How We Do It
Prep the Base
We grade and compact a solid base so the binder has something to bond into.
Spray the Binder
Hot liquid asphalt is sprayed evenly over the prepared surface.
Spread the Stone
Clean crushed aggregate is spread over the wet binder at the right coverage.
Roll and Set
The stone is rolled into the binder so it locks in and the surface sets.
Tar & Chip vs Asphalt vs Millings
| Tar & Chip | Hot-Mix Asphalt | Recycled Millings | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Look | Rustic, natural stone | Smooth, uniform black | Textured, dark gravel-like |
| Cost | Lower than hot-mix | Highest of the three | Lowest |
| Best for | Long rural lanes | Driveways and lots | Rural drives on a budget |
Tar and chip is a warm-weather, dry-surface installation. The binder needs warmth to spray and set, and the stone needs a dry surface to bond. In the Lehigh Valley, freeze-thaw is hard on any surface; tar and chip resists it well when the base is built right.
Family-Owned, Three Generations In
We prep and compact the base first, so the binder bonds into something solid.
We tell you the tradeoffs honestly, including loose stone at first and snow-blower limits.

What People Say
“Dale is a good communicator, keeping in touch with the client compared to my experiences with two other paving companies. He was able to do a paving job as well as seal a prior paving job. He started and completed the work the week after he gave us a price. His team's prep work was neat and precise before laying down the asphalt paving which looks really nice. I would hire him again, if I needed this kind of work done in the future.”
“DSP called half hour after I submitted my project. Was polite, and curious to my time frame. Had it done Fast and great looking.”
