How the Asphalt Formula Works
Hot-mix asphalt is measured and sold by weight (tons) from the asphalt batch plant. The standard paving industry formula assumes approximately 110 lbs of compacted asphalt per square yard, per inch of thickness:
Tons = (Square Feet / 9) × Thickness (Inches) × 110 lbs / 2,000 lbs
| Variable | What it Represents | Why it Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Square Feet / 9 | Converts surface area from square feet into square yards. | Asphalt spreading rates are engineered per square yard. |
| Thickness × 110 lbs | Compacted density factor of plant hot mix. | Loose asphalt raked at 3.75" rolls down to approximately 3" compacted. |
| Divided by 2,000 | Converts pounds to US short tons. | Tri-axle trucks haul in certified ton tickets from the batch plant. |
